Whale Magic, Medicine, and Messages, Part 1

Hands on and face to face with a gray whale. During a ceremonial whale retreat, led by interspecies communicator Neave Karger and Reverend John Halas, a gray whale drew so close to their small boat that it allowed one member of the retreat to reach out and touch its snout. Blue whales bring earth magic up from the deep waters to the surface. Gray whales stabilize energy. Humpbacks are exceptionally curious about humans. These are a few of the tidbits (if “tidbit” is a word that can ever be used in relation to whales) from a recent Akashic Records reading on whale energy.

I invited interspecies communicator, mentor, and nature guide Neave Karger of HeartSong Communication and freediver and whale whisperer Reverend John Halas—who has ventured to multiple international destinations not only to view whales but also to freedive with them—to pose questions about whale energy.

As longtime energy ceremonialists and spiritual explorers, Neave and John recently combined their considerable talents to lead a small-group ceremonial retreat with whales in a protected lagoon of Baja California, Mexico. As co-leaders, Neave and John inspired their group to approach and commune with whales with respect, curiosity, open hearts, and receptive intuition. For five days, the whales consistently, inquisitively, and gently engaged with Neave and John’s group, often choosing to interact with their group instead of other groups also in the area. With a connection like this, who better than Neave and John to ask questions about whale energy.

What is the role of whales in the web of life?

The earth needs whales. If whales didn’t exist, Earth’s life force—Gaia—would be noticeably different. One of Gaia’s most basic roles is transformation: She not only provides a template for how transformation is achieved, but she also makes transformative energy consistently and constantly available to everything on Earth.

Gaia gathers and weaves together many different energetic “flavors” or “tones” from the web of life. And like everything else in creation, whales have a wealth of energetic layers. When it comes to Gaia’s role in transformation, whales have a specific bass note that Gaia needs. If whales didn’t exist, Gaia could still maintain the field of transformation because she draws on all of the web of life. But without whale energy, a specific, unique, and irreplaceable note or flavor would be lacking. To provide a human analogy, it would be a little like eating potato chips that didn’t have any salt.

Are all whales connected?

Yes, all whales are connected. This connection occurs regardless of pod, species, or distance. The connecting force is resonance, each whale’s unique energy or vibration.

Each whale can elect to tune into another’s frequency. But just because all whales can tune into other whales, not all of them do so. Each whale determines whether, when, and how strongly to tune into others. Some whales aren’t interested in perceiving whales outside of their pod, often because their attention is needed for more immediate needs, like seeking food or tending to young.

Here’s an example of how this works. Whales slap their flukes (tails) on the ocean’s surface for a lot of different reasons, like communicating with nearby whales, stunning prey, warning others, or socializing. For whales that choose to dial into the frequency of distant whales, the intention of a fluke slap is readily noticeable, irrespective of distance. Let’s say, to warn others in its pod about a predator, a whale in Arctic waters slaps its fluke. When a whale at the other end of the globe, in the waters of the Antarctic, is energetically tuned in, it perceives the resonance and meaning of that fluke slap in the Arctic. Distance prohibits the whale in the waters of Antarctica from physically responding to help chase away the predator in Arctic waters, but it is aware of the energy of distress carried in the Arctic whale’s fluke slap. To another Antarctic whale focused on gathering food, that energetic message from the Arctic whale’s fluke slap may be essentially nonexistent. At the moment, this whale is not focused on perceiving the energy from a far-off whale.

Note: Blue, gray, and humpback whales showed up during Neave and John’s ceremonial retreat, which prompted this question.

What gifts do blue whales bring to the planet?

When blue whales dive, their powerful energy fields routinely collect a specific type of “earth magic” available only in the deep ocean. When they rise, they bring this magical earth energy to the water’s surface, where it’s dispersed to the air and land. The magical earth energy that blue whales bring up is powerful. To illustrate this, think of a line drawing that depicts the height and depth of a wave. The measurement from the bottom of the wave to the top is known as amplitude. The higher the amplitude, the more powerful the energy.  Because this magical earth energy starts out so deep and then rises so high, it has a very big amplitude, making it exceptionally powerful.

What gifts do gray whales bring to the world?

Because the earth magic that blue whales ferry up from the depths is so potent, it could easily overwhelm the fine balance of other energetic systems after it reaches the surface. It needs adjusting. This is where gray whales come in. Gray whale energy equalizes the sweeping highs and lows—the amplitude—of the earth magic that blue whales bring up. Gray whale energy modulates it enough so that it can easily weave itself into earth’s other energetic systems without overpowering them. As one of the many gifts they bring to the world, you could say that gray whales stabilize the earth magic that arises from the deep seas.

What is the gift of humpback whales?

Humpback whales are deeply curious, including about humans. In fact, they want to communicate with humans. One of their deepest curiosities is trying to understand how humans fit into the environment. Humpbacks obviously know how they fit into their watery world, but they want to know more about how humans fit in with the land and how that affects their waters.

The image above is of John Halas freediving off the island of Tubuai, French Polynesia, in 2022. It illustrates how curious humpback whales seem to be about humans. This photo, taken by Antoine Marci, captures one moment during a day in which John engaged with two humpback whales for an unusually long time. Both whales, one of which is seen here, engaged in gentle play as they danced with John for three-and-a-half hours. Photo is from John Halas’ personal collection and is used here with permission.

Note: A 2025 paper from SETI Institute documented a dozen episodes of humpback whales purposely sending smoke-ring-like bubbles toward humans, appearing to try to communicate.

What brings the whales joy?

What brings them joy is the freedom to be joyful. Whales like to be playful; they breach the surface for a number of different reasons, including simply to play and have fun, especially when they are juveniles. Sometimes, it’s for the sheer joy of it that whales propel themselves high into the air and crash back to the surface, creating enormous noise and massive spray. Humans can learn a lot from whales about doing something just for the simple fun of it.

Next month, we’ll continue the conversation about whale energy, with a focus on how whales and humans, each in their own way, are working to mitigate current chaotic energies. Special thanks to energy ceremonialists and spiritual explorers Neave Karger of HeartSong Communication and Reverend John Halas for bringing their questions about whale energy.
