What’s the general theme for 2026?
Daily routines are going to undergo a reboot. Think about what happens when you reboot your computer. Shutting down the computer clears out and refreshes the system, then the restart takes the system to a new starting point. Almost everyone will find themselves at some new starting point this year.
The reboot/restart may involve money. Paying off a longstanding debt, for example, frees up more cash flow and reboots the household budget. Buying a home or moving into a bigger apartment brings about a different kind of budgetary reboot. Other reboots/restarts may involve family: welcoming a baby, seeing an older child off to college or into a first apartment, or increasing care and support for elders.
This reboot/restart energy may significantly impact work life. Changing professions, finding a new role within your vocation, or being transferred from one company branch office to another upends daily routines and feels like a brand-new beginning, at least for a while until you get used to your new starting point.
Is there a longer-term trend to this energy?
Some life changes will be smaller and planned, or at least you can see them coming. Other changes will be bigger and happen faster than you can anticipate. That’s because the reboot/restart energy is the uppermost layer of a wave that can best be described as a wave of reinvention. This deep-rooted energy will affect more than daily routines. Economic and social adjustments will also play out within this arc.
There is a strong possibility that the current trend in workforce changes will continue. On a practical level, this means not all jobs may survive a company reorganization. When unexpected job changes are thrust into your life, the short-term consequences may go well beyond a reboot. They could require a complete reinvention of your work life and possibly even a change of location. This undertone of the reinvention energy is the releasing of “what was” to make room for “what is to be,” although this perspective may not be of much comfort when dealing with an unexpected job change.
What’s the wider effect of this energy of reinvention?
This wave of reinvention supports an upwelling of creativity. In time, many new types of smaller businesses, such as mom-and-pop shops, will be founded. New companies will gravitate toward specialty niches. Entirely new ways of working will be created. This larger wave of reinvention started in mid- to late-2025 and will continue for several years.
In addition to economic changes, this unfolding wave of reinvention also carries with it the capacity for a deep social reassessment. The changes you make as you reboot/reinvent your life might not seem like they will have a large overall effect, but over time entire systems will be modified as more people make changes.
Here’s a simplified analogy of how this can play out. Think of the way baker’s yeast affects bread dough. A packet of baker’s yeast contains billions of dormant single-cell organisms. When the dormant yeast is added to the heavy dough, each yeast cell is activated and begins its work. If you look at the activity of each individual yeast cell, the change it makes in its tiny portion of dough is miniscule. But taken as a whole, the natural activity of the multitude of individual cells creates expansion, lifting and lightening the dough, giving it a new structure.
This is akin to what the current energy of reinvention, especially around work, can nurture in the coming years. We will be seeing initial hints of this in 2026. As you reboot/restart/reinvent your life — money, residence, family, creating or settling into new work — it may seem like you’re affecting only yourself and your loved ones. When thousands of people reboot/restart/reinvent their lives, entire structures change.
Each individual change is not part of an intentional, coordinated mass movement. But the cumulative effect of the individual changes — for the better in the long run — ends up having a wider effect on the community as a whole.
What other effects might we see?
Right now, many people feel that the divisions between different groups are so deep they say they don’t see a way these divisions can be bridged. However, this wave of reinvention can eventually aid in reconnecting many strained social structures. Creating at least some form of common ground between disparate sides is going to take time. Given the underlying reinvention energy, we’ll start seeing the earliest wisps of this in 2026.
Reinventing connections within larger social structures begins with small acts. Joining a bowling team, softball league, weaving group, or garden club, for example, creates connections with people you might not otherwise interact with. To win a trophy with your team, you don’t need to share the same politics, come from the same economic strata, or have similar educational backgrounds. By showing up and working together toward a common goal, you are strengthening the bonds of society. These seemingly small social connections do a world of good, even if they seem like a miniscule dot within the bigger picture. Over time, these small connections will come to have an outsize importance.
